He was heavily involved in the infrastructure of the investment management industry by being a member of the Bank of England Steering Committee on Crest (the UK securities settlement system) and by being on the SWIFT Securities Steering Board when SWIFT started to design and use messages for the securities industry.
He graduated as a Bachelor of Laws in 1975 and qualified as a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland in 1978.
