Louis Bacon a effectué ses études à l'Episcopal High School, à Alexandria, en Virginie, mais également au Middlebury Collège, où il a étudié la littérature et en est sorti diplômé. Plus tard, il a reçu son MBA de la Columbia Business School.
Louis Bacon a commencé comme trader et courtier de contrats à terme pour Lehman Brothers à New York. En 1986, il a fondé Moore Capital Management (dont il est encore aujourd'hui le gérant), un des principaux hedge fund avec 15 milliards de dollars en actifs sous gestion. Moore Capital, dont le siège est à New York, possède d'autres bureaux à Londres, Toronto et Washington DC.
Louis Bacon possèdait une fortune estimée à 1,4 milliards de dollars, faisant de lui, selon le classement Forbes 2011, la 736ème personne la plus riche du monde. Il est considéré comme l'un des 100 meilleurs traders du 20ème siècle.
Mr Bacon possède de nombreuses résidences à travers le monde : au Colorado, aux Bahamas, une luxueuse maison de ville dans l'Upper East Side à Long Island (qui comprend un pavillon de chasse à proximité de l'île de Robin, qui est également la propriété de Bacon), une résidence en Écosse, et trois terrains de polo.
Il est très prudent concernant sa vie privée, à la limite de la paranoïa.
