Mr. Matt Sherman is Senior Advisor at The Scowcroft Group, Inc. Mr. Sherman recently concluded two years of government service in Iraq.
Under the Coalition Provisional Authority and later the Department of State, Mr. Sherman advised both senior Iraqi and Coalition personnel on non-military security matters, and was the coordinator of policy that guided the creation and operations of Iraq’s domestic security forces and assisted with the development of the 2005 election strategies.
Prior to his appointment to Iraq, Mr. Sherman had other foreign assignments with the Department of State to Bosnia, Kosovo, Croatia, Montenegro, Ukraine and Moldova where he served as an election security planner and an international monitor.
As a private civilian, Mr. Sherman worked as the Director of Research for General Colin Powell and his non-profit organization, America's Promise.
He also served on the Foreign Policy Advisory Board of the George W.
Bush for President 2000 Campaign, chaired by Dr. Condoleezza Rice.
Trained as an attorney, he practiced corporate law for the firm, Drinker Biddle & Reath.
Mr. Sherman received his B.A and J.D.
from the University of North Carolina, and an M.Phil.
in International Relations from Cambridge University.
As a Fulbright Scholar, he worked with the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs on bi-lateral U.S.
– Australian trade regulations.
He is a contributor to the Opinion page of The New York Times and is a consultant to the defense community on security issues in the Middle East.
