The core consists of fundamental equity and credit positions, supplemented by short- and medium-term, catalyst-driven equity satellites invested in liquid equity, sector swaps and index futures. They conduct fundamental research to generate catalyst ideas which are fed into the firm's quantitative model.

Seven Pillars utilizes a long-term mindset, a value-oriented investment approach, and a focus on downside protection. The firm conducts rigorous fundamental bottom-up research to understand the business model, assess business and management quality, and determine a likely long-term annual return on their investment. The filing of investment research helps them identify reasons to sell securities. There are only three reasons for selling: there is no longer an adequate margin of safety, there is a more lucrative investment opportunity available, or they have made a mistake.
