Dernier héritier d'une grande dynastie de banquiers, Michel David-Weill fait ses études au lycée français de New York. Il passe toute son enfance balloté entre New York et Paris. Après son baccalauréat, il intègre l'Institut d'études politiques de Paris.
En 1956, il rejoint la banque familiale Lazard, fondée en 1876 à San Francisco par les familles Lazard et Weill. En 1961, il devient Président de Lazard Frères. D'abord basé à Paris, il est ensuite transféré au bureau de New York et devient associé principal en 1977. Il dirige la Banque Lazard de 1977 à 2001.
Michel David-Weill, qualifié de "Dernier Empereur de Wall Street" tant son influence a été décisive jusque dans les années 1980, cède sa place à Bruce Wasserstein en 2004 en empochant près de 3 milliards d'euros. Ce dernier, connu pour avoir mené de nombreuses restructurations d'entreprises américaines dans les années 1980 et 1990 met en place de nouvelles stratégies. Il embauche de grands noms de la finance, modernise les bureaux, souhaite élargir l'entreprise et introduit certaines de ses activités en bourse.
Michel David-Weill considère que la banque Lazard a perdu sa vocation première de conseil sur le long terme en privilégiant la valeur actionnariale basée sur le dividende et le court terme. Le banquier se consacre alors à sa passion pour l'art.
Il est élu membre libre de l'Académie des beaux-arts en 1982. Personnalité éminente du monde culturel, il est depuis 1988 Président du Conseil artistique de la réunion des Musées Nationaux. Il est également membre de l'Automobile Club de France. Il a été membre du Conseil de la Société des Amis du Louvre. Son grand père, David David-Weill, fut un donateur important du Louvre (citons les sublimes rafraîchissoirs en argent de Thomas Germain par exemple). Il est membre du Metropolitan Museum Council de New York.
Globe-trotter incessant, Michel David-Weill a visité les musées du monde entier. En avril 2007, il est promu Grand officier de la Légion d'honneur.
Il est actuellement vice-président et administrateur du groupe Danone et membre du Conseil de surveillance de Publicis. Président du directoire d'Eurazeo, il en est le principal actionnaire avec 48,9% de son capital. Eurazeo est une entreprise issue de la fusion d'Azeo et d'Eurafrance en 2001.
L'activité de la société repose essentiellement sur la gestion de participations d'autres sociétés et d'actifs financiers. Eurazeo est l'une des plus importantes sociétés européennes d'investissement. Elle détient des participations dans Accor, Air Liquide le spécialiste des gaz industriels et médicaux liquéfiés ou comprimés, Banca Leonardo, Danone, Europcar, le groupe de location de véhicules industriels Fraikin, la chaîne hôtelière B&B et le distributeur de matériel électrique Rexel. Eurazeo a enregistré 863 millions d'euros de chiffre d'affaires au premier trimestre 2010.
